Fatty acids are essentially the “building blocks” that a living organism uses to construct fats. In the average person, fats make up about 20% of the body (this includes not only subcutaneous fat but also the structural fats within our internal organs).
Furthermore, fatty acids are a component of the cell membranes of every single organism. As it turns out, fatty acids play a vital role in all bodily functions—from normal brain operation and memory to respiration and blood circulation.
Dietary fats contain three types of fatty acids:
Saturated;
Monounsaturated;
Polyunsaturated.
Omega-3, 6, and 9 are unsaturated fatty acids. They are easily distinguished from saturated fats, as the latter remain solid at room temperature (e.g., butter). In contrast, unsaturated fats are liquid (e.g., vegetable oil, fish oil). Generally, Omega-3, 6, and 9 protect the body’s cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.
In turn, Omega-9 consists of monounsaturated fatty acids. They are not considered “essential” because the body can synthesize them from Omega-3 and Omega-6. However, Omega-3 and 6 are polyunsaturated. These acids are not produced by the body but are regularly consumed (at the very least, to synthesize Omega-9). Therefore, it is necessary to obtain them regularly through food or supplements.
Specifically, Omega-3 acids include:
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA),
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA),
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
DHA accounts for 10–20% of all fats in the brain, positively affects vision, participates in cell creation, and improves memory.
EPA reduces inflammation and helps combat skin diseases, depression, and anxiety.
ALA is often added to cosmetic products to prevent skin diseases, as well as to shampoos and face creams. This is because alpha-linolenic acid has the property of strengthening capillaries and making blood vessel walls and skin more elastic.
According to the recommendations of ISSFAL (International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids), an adult requires 0.65g of EPA and DHA per day.
Men over the age of 30 often begin to develop cardiovascular issues. Smoking, poor air quality, nervous tension, and sedentary or strenuous labor are factors that cause men to overexert themselves and fall ill more frequently. Regular consumption of the daily norm of Omega-3 with Vitamin E reduces the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and coronary heart disease while lowering blood cholesterol levels.
Supplements containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are recommended for athletes to strengthen the immune system, which can be weakened by intense training. Omega-3 also helps lower cortisol—the stress hormone. This allows for increased workout duration and, consequently, greater effectiveness. Additionally, as we know, Omega-3 strengthens cell membranes, protecting them from destruction, which positively impacts the recovery process between training sessions.
A key feature of taking Omega-3 and Omega-6 is their combination and ratio. The optimal ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 in a person’s diet is 1:4, but in the modern world, it is often skewed in favor of Omega-6 by dozens of times.
When taken in the correct ratio with Omega-6, Omega-3 penetrates tissues well and strengthens cell membranes while reducing inflammation. Meanwhile, Omega-6 fights excess cholesterol, cleanses blood vessels, and helps prevent weight gain from fats. The optimal daily intake of Omega-3 for the body is 1 gram per day.
If you exceed this norm by several dozen times, you may experience common side effects similar to overeating fat—nausea, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal signals. We also recommend consulting a doctor before use, especially if you have a history of seafood allergies.
When choosing Omega supplements, it is also important to ask which part of the fish the extract is made from. For instance, “fish liver oil” is an extract from the liver. In addition to Omega fatty acids, this raw material contains many other inseparable substances.
MST Omega products are made from “fish body oil”—an extract from the muscle fibers of the fish. This raw material is purer and allows the formula to be further enhanced with additional vitamins and minerals.
