Treatment of obesity – what are the options?

Obesity is a chronic and relapsing disease. It is defined as an excessive accumulation of adipose tissue and is most often diagnosed with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or more.

Obesity is a serious disease that, if not treated, leads to many complications. This is a consequence of a chronically positive energy balance, which leads to an increase in body weight, mainly adipose tissue. Obesity does not go away by itself and often requires long-term complex treatment.

Obesity – causes, complications

The direct cause of obesity is a constant excess of energy needs. However, this excess of calories is often rooted in disorders, problems that need to be addressed first.

Dietary causes of obesity that lead to weight gain include:

  • chaotic, irregular eating;
  • unconscious calorie consumption.

The lifestyles that many people lead (many hours of sitting, on-the-go) can contribute to high-calorie, processed foods and low energy expenditure (low physical activity during the day). Most often, this is combined with the removal of stress accumulated during the day in the form of eating in the evening.

There are many other reasons that can contribute to weight gain. However, most often the cause of obesity is associated with an incorrect lifestyle, so the treatment of obesity involves, first of all:

  • change in eating habits;
  • increase in physical activity;
  • stress and sleep management.

Obesity, like any other disease, must be treated to prevent dangerous complications.

Obese people are more likely to suffer from such diseases as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, lipid metabolism disorders, stroke, heart attack, joint disease, and some types of cancer.

Moreover, obesity significantly impairs the quality of life and negatively affects mental health and well-being. Any abnormal body weight (underweight, overweight, obesity) reduces male and female fertility.

Change of lifestyle

The basis of obesity treatment is non-drug treatment, i.e. diet therapy, increased physical activity, and changes in health habits and behaviors aimed at reducing body weight, especially adipose tissue.

The basis of diet therapy for obesity should be a diet with a deficit of calories. To get this deficit, you need to calculate your total metabolic rate (CPM), which is the amount of energy needed to maintain your current body weight. From this amount, 500 to 1000 kcal should be taken, i.e. Create a calorie deficit.

“Just” eating less is usually not enough to treat obesity. Treatment of obesity is a long-term process that involves permanent changes in eating habits and other elements of lifestyle. For this reason alone, you should not sit on a hunger strike or other miracle diets for a while. Obesity is a recurring disease, so you need to learn a new, healthier lifestyle.
